What you will find here
Mostly original production art from animated series and films. Japanese studios make up much of it: Toei Animation (Dragon Ball), Studio Pierrot (Boruto), Madhouse, Studio Sunrise, Tokyo Movie Shinsha (Lupin III), Nippon Animation and Kitty Films. Western studios include Hanna-Barbera (The Flintstones, Tom and Jerry), Marvel and Don Bluth. There are also figures from Leblon Delienne and Warner Bros, and a few film prints.
Types of animation art
- Cel: a transparent celluloid sheet with the character painted on the back, which was photographed for the finished film.
- Cel with background: the cel shown over a painted background. A copy background is a reproduction, not the original production background.
- Animation drawing: the pencil drawing a cel was traced from.
- Preliminary drawing: earlier-stage work, such as layout or key poses.
What to check before buying
- Sizes: many anime cels are about 23 x 27 cm, the standard Japanese format.
- Paint condition: cel paint can crack, lift or stick to the paper behind it.
- Whether the matching drawing is included with the cel.
- Storage: keep cels flat, out of sunlight and away from heat.
Condition is mostly described as Excellent or Good. Most items here are between about EUR 400 and EUR 870. Each is a one-off, shipping is free, and the product page shows the ship-by date.
Frequently asked questions
What is an animation cel?
A cel is a clear celluloid (acetate) sheet on which a character was inked or traced on the front and painted on the back. Cels were laid over painted backgrounds and photographed frame by frame to make hand-drawn animation. Most studios stopped using them in the late 1990s and early 2000s when production moved to digital colouring.
What does 'copy background' mean on an animation cel?
A copy background is a reproduction of the painted scenery, such as a colour print, placed behind an original cel for display. It is not the background actually used in production. An original production background is a hand-painted artwork in its own right and is usually listed and valued separately.
How should I look after an animation cel?
Keep it flat, away from direct sunlight, heat and damp. Celluloid can warp, and the paint on the back can crack or lift if the cel is bent or kept too warm. For framing, use acid-free materials and UV-filtering glass, and avoid pressing the cel directly against the glass.
