Makers include Märklin, Fleischmann, Roco, Piko, Brawa and Lenz. Many models represent German, Swiss and Austrian railways: DB, DRG, SBB-CFF and ÖBB.
Scale and gauge
- H0 (1:87) is the most common scale here.
- N (1:160) is much smaller and suits limited space.
- 0 (about 1:45) and 1 (1:32) are large-scale, often for garden or display layouts.
Power and control
This is the most important thing to check. Märklin H0 runs on AC (alternating current) with a centre stud track, while Fleischmann, Roco, Piko and most others run on DC (direct current) two-rail track. The two are not compatible without conversion. Control is listed as analogue, digital (DCC or Märklin mfx), DCC ready (can be fitted with a decoder), or digital with sound.
What to check before buying
- The catalogue number in the title identifies the exact model; use it to confirm livery and railway era.
- Whether the original box and inserts are included.
- Condition, given here as Mint, Near mint or Very good.

Frequently asked questions
Can Märklin trains run on Roco or Fleischmann track?
Not without conversion. Märklin H0 uses a three-rail AC system with centre studs in the track, while Roco, Fleischmann, Piko and most other H0 makers use two-rail DC. A Märklin locomotive will not run on standard two-rail track, and a two-rail DC locomotive will short on Märklin track. Each listing here states the power supply.
What does DCC ready mean on a model locomotive?
DCC ready means the locomotive runs on normal analogue control but has a socket for a digital decoder to be plugged in later. DCC (Digital Command Control) lets you run several trains independently on the same track and control lights and sound. A locomotive listed as 'digital' already has a decoder fitted.
What is H0 scale?
H0, sometimes written HO, is the most widely used model railway scale, at 1:87 with a track gauge of 16.5 mm. A typical H0 locomotive is between 15 and 30 cm long. It is supported by most European makers, including Märklin, Fleischmann, Roco and Piko, so parts and rolling stock are easy to combine within the same power system.
